Chapter Twenty-Five
âNattie!â Sebastian called while he jogged behind me as soon as I exited my classroom building.
I peered over my shoulder, acknowledging his voice but not stopping. The sight of him kicked my heart into gear.
âAre you gonna ignore me forever?â He fell into step beside me.
Forever? That had been the plan. His texts were unanswered. Calls declined. Iâd taken different routes to and from my classes. Annika and Johnny were done, so I had no need to be around the football players anymore.
Now, his familiar face made my chest ache with longing. When I thought about him for too long, I hated the flame that flickered to life inside me.
âWhat do we have to say to each other?â I hitched my satchel higher onto my shoulder.
He placed his hand on my arm, stilling my hasty pace. âGet coffee with me. One hot beverage.â
âI have somewhere to be.â
âOh yeah? Whereâs that?â He shoved his hands into the pockets of his coat.
I sighed. Nowhere, and he knew it. âFine.â I shifted direction toward the school cafeteria.
âNo, weâre not having this conversation on campus.â Sebastian gestured to the parking lot closest to us. âI have my vehicle. Weâll go somewhere else.â
âYou never bring it on campus.â There I went showing how much attention I paid to his habits.
âI needed a getaway car. Thought I might have to kidnap you to get you to talk to me.â His voice wasnât tinged with his usual humor.
I stole a glance at him out of the corner of my eye but said nothing.
Sebastian sighed. âFootball season is almost over. Holidays are coming. I want to be square with you before I go to Bermuda.â
âWhat does that mean?â I asked as we approached his vehicle.
âGet in, Nattie. Okay? Give me this one thing without fighting me on it.â
I climbed into his SUV and put my bag on my knee like a shield, but I didnât argue with him.
We drove in silence for a minute before Sebastian said, âWhat do you remember about the other night?â
Heat climbed into my cheeks, and I focused on the scenery outside instead of meeting his gaze.
âOkay,â he said. âSo, you remember at least some of it.â There was a smile in his voice.
âYeah, I remember bits and pieces.â
âI thought you ran out on me. When I woke up the next morning and I couldnât find you. I thought you were upset with me,â Sebastian said quietly.
âWhat?â I sought his gaze across the distance. âI was in Annikaâs room. I didnât mean to fall asleep. Is that why you left that note? The âIâm sorryâ crap?â
âYeah, I wanted us to be okay,â he said. âI wanted to avoid this.â He gestured to the interior.
âAwkwardness?â
âNo, this avoidance bullshit. Itâs bullshit. I told you I wanted to be with you and then you toss me aside like Iâm nothinâ.â His expression was a mixture of frustration and disbelief. âIâve been going over it and over it. Whatâd I do? I did the honorable thing. The right thing.
